BRIARWOOD

PAR-T-LINE

June-July 2007
Edited by Al Gregson

WAYNE JACOBS led all players with a 71 to lead the Briarwood East team that tied with Country Club of York for first place in the YCAGA Interclub at Range End May 20. T.J. OSTROM chipped in with a 72 and MATT SHUMAN and BILL BRENNER rounded out the squad that posted a 283. But CCY, led by 73s from Bob Kuhn and David Sirolly, won the playoff on the second extra hole. Cary Walton and John McClure completed the tandem for the Hilltoppers. Grandview finished third with 289.

Next up, the Briarwood West Club Championship June 16 and 17. There’s a $10 entry fee, plus greens fees for the 36-hole medal play title. BILL BRENNER has won it the last two years in a row. Get your entry in at the pro shop as soon as possible. Those more interested in competition at Manada will find the individual on June 16, with a $65 entry fee, and the better ball on June 17, with the team entry fee of $130.

The Briarwood East Senior Championship is set for June 24. Greens fees plus $10 to enter. If you’re 50 or older on the tournament date, you are eligible. (70 and older may play from the gold tees in the Super Seniors division.) The overall champ will be determined at scratch from the regular tees and net scores will determine the age-division winners. Lunch is included after the round, so enjoy a fun day for all.

Friday, June 29 will see another Friday night scramble. Meet at the main clubhouse for captain’s picks at 5:45. Then, we’re headed for the Blue Nine for some exciting golf. Add the cart and prizes and all anyone pays is $26. A good, relaxing way to begin the weekend.

Not only will the TOM TAFT Memorial beginning at 12:30 on June 30 be a great day on the golf course with many of his friends and acquaintances, but also it will be an opportunity to help buy an automated external defibrillator for the Briarwood clubhouse. Tom died of a heart attack and what better way to honor his memory than to get a device that will improve someone else’s chance of surviving sudden cardiac arrest from 5 percent to 80 percent. Entry fee is $250 a foursome. Winning players will divide $1,000 in prizes and all will enjoy a delicious meal of pulled pork and beef, plus ham and turkey cooked to order with three side dishes.

The Fourth of July is a Wednesday this year, smack in the middle of the week. That won’t stop our traditional Syndicate event from taking place. Make your tee time now with your regular foursome, or we’ll be happy to join you up. It’s like a giant skins game, with handicap and carryovers. Two tie, all tie, but capture a hole by yourself and you’ll be rewarded. Entry fee is only $6, plus greens fees.

Holiday rates on the Fourth. Just $35 with cart, $27 after 11. Capital Region rates are $31 and $24.

Two fivesomes tied with 28 on the White Nine Scramble on May 25, starting off the Memorial Day weekend. T.J. OSTROM, MIKE MACKERETH, JOE SCHWARZ, BRIAN SMITH and STAN STOUGH equaled SKIP SHAFFER, STU OLEWILER, DOUG DUBS, DANNY BAUST and MARVIN PARIS. MIKE SKELLY, WARREN and GREG GUNNETT, KIRK and MARCIA FISHER and SHERRI DIETZ scored 29.

SAM BERRYMAN and DEAN WALTIMYER JR. shared first place with 22 points apiece in the Point Quota event on Memorial Day. MIKE MACKERETH had 21 for third, while AL HUFNAGEL, JEFF SHANK and JOHN EVELER tied for fourth with 20 points.

The Briarwood Two-Man Scramble is July 29. Scratch golf, cart, prizes and range balls for $75 a player. There are two things to remember as you get ready for the Briarwood East Club Championship in August. One is that CRAIG MORROW, who won the match-play title the last two years, has turned pro and is playing on the Hooter’s Tour. That leaves eight berths open in the Championship Flight. The second thing to remember is that the Aug. 4 qualifying will shotgun at 12:30 p.m. this year. That’s a later start than usual but it was the only way Briarwood was able to honor a commitment during this heavy-demand golfing season. Those not making the Championship Flight will be placed in other flights, based on handicap or qualifying score. Matches will be played Aug. 5th, 11th and 12th. The finals on the 12th are scheduled for 36 holes for the Championship Flight and 18 holes for the other flights. Entry fee is $10 plus greens fees. All are welcome.JEFF SHANK and DAVE FRY scored best in the Blind Partners event on May 6. Their total of 151 was two shots clear of runners-up JOHN EVELER/ALAN LITTLE and SKIP SHAFFER/DEAN WALTIMYER JR.The Score Fore a Cure tournament has its third annual run June 28 on the East Course. Coffee and donuts, an 8 a.m. shotgun, 18-hole golf scramble with cart, lunch, beverages and prizes all included for the $65 entry. The $10,000 hole-in-one is back, so grab an entry form in the clubhouse. Send foursome entries with a $260 check to: R. Louis Ordndorff, 339 Kirkham Drive, York, PA 17402. Benefit of  Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. On July 15, the Briarwood West Senior Championship gets it on at the par 70 layout. CLAIR STOUGH is the defending champ. Entry fee is $10, plus greens fees, and includes lunch. Overall winner is the low gross from the regular tees. Age-group winners will be net and super seniors (over 70) may hit from the gold tees. The LEO CLUB is celebrating its 10th anniversary tournament in a big way on July 27. The $70 per golfer entry fee gets you golf with cart, prizes for men’s and ladies’ divisions, refreshments on the course and a huge pig roast. Choose your team carefully for this foursome scramble, because each player’s drive must be used once on the front and once on the back nine. Sponsorship opportunities are available and proceeds go to the students of the Red Lion Area School District to promote education and literacy. Entry blanks at the clubhouse. The Pennsylvania Seniors has combined with the Keystone Games for a 36-hole golf tournament July 25-26 at Briarwood East. Entry fee, including carts is $75 for both days. There are 10 age divisions, five each for men and women, for the over-50 set. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. each day. Caddies are not allowed. The state youth will compete in a 54-hole tournament July 24-26 on the same course. The entry fee is $75 for the three days. There are six grade divisions, three each for boys and girls. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, after the seniors on Wednesday and by a shotgun start on Thursday. Caddies and carts not allowed.
